Seattle Storm guard Jewell Loyd is inching closer toward breaking Diana Taurasi's all-time single-season WNBA scoring record.

Loyd scored 25 points in the Storm's 72-61 win over the Los Angeles Sparks on Thursday. Her 824 points on the season are now the second-most in WNBA history, per ESPN Stats & Info.

Jewell Loyd now needs only 37 points to surpass Diana Taurasi's single-season record of 860 points. That's attainable considering Loyd has been averaging a WNBA-best 24.2 points per game in 2023. The Storm have only four games remaining so Loyd, barring any unforeseen injuries, will break Taurasi's record before the regular-season ends.

The 29-year-old Loyd has become the face of the Storm franchise after Sue Bird retired following the 2022 WNBA campaign. Loyd has carried a heavier scoring load after Bird's departure. It's Loyd's first time to average more than 20 points per game in her nine-year WNBA career.

Despite Jewell Loyd's best efforts, the Storm have won just 11 of 36 games. It's their worst showing since her rookie year in 2015 when they had an atrocious 10-24 win-loss record.

Although Seattle has taken a huge step backward from its 22-14 record last year, Loyd has been one of the few bright spots.

Jewell Loyd scored a career-high 39 points in a 109-103 win over the Dallas Wings on June 18. It was the highest-scoring output ever by a Storm player in regulation.

To nobody's surprise, Loyd earned her fifth career WNBA All-Star Game selection. She continued her scoring rampage with 31 points in Team Stewart's 143-127 win over Team Wilson on July 16.

Jewell Loyd shows no signs of slowing down. Not only will she break Diana Taurasi's single-scoring record, but she will also lead the charge for the Storm in the next several years.
