According to an article published on Saturday by Scott Bordow of azcentral.com, Phoenix Suns General Manager Ryan McDonough said it’s time for the team to become more aggressive in free agency than initially planned.
With rising star Devin Booker and the emergence of small forward T.J. Warren, McDonough thinks the Suns' cap space and future assets should be used as leverage to lure free agents this offseason.
“We’ll probably be more aggressive in June and July than we have been the last couple of years,” McDonough said.
Phoenix's trade of Eric Bledsoe to the Milwaukee Bucks in early November for center Greg Monroe and a protected first and a second-round draft pick cleared up about $15 million in cap space.
“There are certain core pieces that are starting to solidify,” McDonough said. “I think we’d be foolish or naïve to wait forever or be overly patient. We’ve been, I think, relatively disciplined with contracts we’ve given out in terms of length and dollars, but yeah, we’re planning on being one of five of six teams with a decent amount of cap space, and we’ll see if we can improve the team.”
If the team decides not to re-sign center Alex Len this summer, it will potentially create an additional $5 million in cap space for the Suns to go after a point guard and a center in both free agency and the 2018 NBA Draft.
“One of the things we’re excited about in this draft is if all the players we expect to declare are in, I think the strength of the draft is where we can use some help, at the one and the five primarily,” McDonough said. “We’re kind of searching for answers long-term at those positions.”
It should be pretty interesting to see who the Suns go after in order to upgrade their young roster, as there is a very intriguing list of free agents for the 2018 offseason.
