First overall pick, Deandre Ayton will play his first game with the Suns on Friday in the Las Vegas Summer League. It will be his first action in a Phoenix Suns uniform.
But according to a report from Scott Bordow of the Arizona Republic, Ayton's back is giving him problems. Bordow reports that Ayton has missed practices with back soreness, but it will not keep him out of Friday's action.
This is not what Suns fans want to hear before summer league action kicks off. The Arizona product should be one of the cornerstones for a rebuilding Phoenix franchise.
But it's safe to say that no team is willing to risk one of their most valuable assets in a summer league. Furthermore, any missed practice time was likely precautionary. It's safe to assume that the Suns are remaining cautious with their future star's health.
The 7-foot-1 center was a stud at the University of Arizona. During his one year in Tuscon, Deandre Ayton put up 20.1 points, 11.6 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks per game. The one-and-done player played well enough to be named a consensus All-American and bring home Pac-12 Player of the Year honors.
The Suns are hoping that he lives up to the hype and expectations that surround the big man. Ayton and the Suns will play the Dallas Mavericks on Friday, July 6, but first-round pick Luka Doncic is unlikely to play.
Despite Doncic's probable absence, promising second-year player Dennis Smith Jr. should suit up for Dallas. Ayton and Smith Jr. are reason enough to tune in.
