The Phoenix Suns kicked off their first notable trade of the 2017-18 NBA season by dealing guard Eric Bledsoe for big man Greg Monroe and a first-round draft pick. Following the whole Bledsoe fiasco, Suns general manager Ryan McDonough was quick to find a solid return for the former Kentucky Wildcat.

However, it was a bit surprising to see the acquisition of a player like Monroe given their current youth movement. According to ESPN's Nick Friedell, the veteran Monroe was also seemingly a bit shocked by the trade.

Greg Monroe admits he was “blindsided” and “surprised” by deal that sent him to the Suns. Monroe says he would play in Phoenix, but acknowledges that it's a strange situation because Suns organization is trying to figure out which direction it wants to go after acquiring him in the Eric Bledsoe deal.

There is now speculation that the Suns may either be looking to trade before the deadline or reach some kind of buyout. Given their current roster, a move may be best for both sides.

Monroe could best serve as a piece on a legitimate contender if he wants to increase his value before next summer. He has played in just five games this year, registering 6.8 points and 5.0 rebounds in 15.8 minutes.
