The NCAA got a massive dose of reality handed its way on Monday as the Supreme Court voted 9-0 in favor of student-athletes being able to receive education related benefits from their schools. Many are hoping this is just the first domino to fall as student-athletes continue to build their case against the NCAA in what has seemed like a decade long quest.
Among the statements that came out upon the decision, one from Justice Brett Kavanaugh stood out to many.
âNCAA couches its arguments for not paying student athletes in innocuous labels. But the labels cannot disguise the reality: The NCAAâs business model would be flatly illegal in almost any other industry in AmericaâŚNowhere else in America can businesses get away with agreeing to not pay their workers a fair market rate on their theory that their product is defined by not paying their workers a fair market rate. The NCAA is not above the law.â â Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
It's a decision that signals a massive win for student-athletes and it's one that was handed down unanimously. Along with receiving education related benefits, student-athletes can now also be paid for post-graduate internships.
Certainly the NCAA can't and won't be thrilled with this outcome and it comes on the heels of some states putting into order college athletes being able to benefit and profit off of their likeness while still being an NCAA athlete.
There figure to be many more decisions that lie ahead as student-athletes and others start and now continue to fight back against the NCAA.
