Twenty-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic is looking set to close the year with another remarkable run.

Novak Djokovic has been enjoying a resurgent stint as he opened up his 14th ATP Finals campaign with a win over Casper Ruud. The world no. 1 thumped Ruud 7-6, 6-2 to secure his 39th career victory at the prestigious event.

The thrilling win saw him matching Ivan Lendl in second place and trailing behind only Roger Federer, who boasts 59 wins to his name.

The 34-year-old struggled a bit in finding his rhythm at the beginning of the match. However, he managed to rally back and dominated the ATP Tour debutant for the rest of the game.

Djokovic followed it up with a 6-3, 6-2 round-robin win over Andrey Rublev on Wednesday. He is now qualified for the semi-finals at the Nitto ATP Finals.

On Friday, Djokovic will take on Stefanos Tsitsipas' replacement and another newbie Cameron Norrie for a round-robin match. According to “The Joker,” it's always good to play against fresh faces but he's not taking Norrie for granted.

“I always like playing new players, particularly in one of the greatest tournaments in the world here in Turin. Cameron deserves to be here, it’s not lucky,” Djokovic said ahead of the match via ATPtour.com.

“He worked his way to Turin with great wins in Indian Wells and some other tournaments, so it will be fun to watch him tonight against Ruud and I’ll get ready for my next match,” he continued.

Djokovic will now be attempting to match Roger Federer’s stunning record of six titles at the elite end-of-season ATP tournament.
