On Friday, tennis legend Boris Becker was sentenced to two and a half years of prison. He was previously convicted after having been found guilty of illegally moving thousands of dollars from a bank account after having filed for bankruptcy.

The six-time Grand Slam champion was found guilty of four counts under the Insolvency Act. The charges included removal of property, concealing debt, and two charges of failing to disclose estate assets. London’s Southward Crown Court’s jury found Becker guilty of these charges a couple of weeks ago.

The only question at that point was would Becker face jail time, and if so, how much. Now we know and it is truly shocking. Even though, technically, he could have faced up to seven years in prison. Nevertheless, it's rare that you see an athlete of his stature put behind bars.

The centered around his bankruptcy case from 2017, which stemmed from unpaid loans a few years prior.

During the bankruptcy trial, Becker was forced to relinquish his awards that he won over the course of his illustrious career. That included Wimbledon trophies and an Olympic Gold Medal. Becker's reputation might be somewhat tarnished, but tennis fans will never forget what he did for the sport.
