Tennis sensation and 2021 Australian Open champion Naomi Osaka had not lost in her last 23 matches. That is, until Wednesday.

Osaka suffered a stunning upset at the hands of Greek tennis player Maria Sakkari during the Miami Open quarterfinals, losing in straight sets and watching her unprecedented run of wins come to a screeching halt.

Sakkari deserves plenty of credit for doing something nobody has been able to accomplish in beating Osaka. Similarly, Osaka deserves all the credit for the high quality of tennis she has been playing.

Osaka was last defeated by Sara Sorribes Tormo in the first round of the Fed Cup qualifiers last February. That's right, it has been over a full calendar year since she has lost in singles competition.

It should be noted Osaka has a couple of losses on her record since then. But those came via walkovers in the final of the Western & Southern Open last August and the semifinal of the Gippsland Trophy just prior to the Australian Open. So, Sakkari is indeed the first to beat Osaka in head-to-head competition in over 13 months.

Naomi Osaka has displayed both grit and dominance dating back to last year's U.S. Open. The 23-year-old overcame a pair of three-set matches at Flushing Meadows last summer and also battled back from a set down in the final against Victoria Azarenka to win her second U.S. Open Crown. She then ran the gauntlet in Melbourne in February, including a straight-set victory over Americans Serena Williams (semifinals) and Jennifer Brady (final).

It would hardly be a surprise for Osaka to go on another run in preparation for the other Grand Slams in 2021. But Sakkari ensured Osaka's current streak would not last through the Miami Open.
