The asking price for Terry Rozier apparently went up, as he accepted a max extension from the Charlotte Hornets the will keep him in Buzz City until 2026. Twitter wasted no time saying that “The Hornets overpaid for him”, or “They will just trade him”, and a lot more trash.

However, they haters need to stop because Rozier ended every penny of this brand new deal and no one can really debate that. He put up career highs across the board last season and proved to be a reliable scoring option down the stretch of games. Locking down Rozier was a smart move by management and here is why.

Terry Rozier Extension Positives For Hornets

Ball X Rozier

The Hornets are one of the youngest teams in the league and Rozier provides some veteran leadership, especially for a guy like LaMelo Ball.

Moreover, Terry Rozier had the best season of his six-year career last season. The two seem to be a hand in glove fit when it comes down to running the offense and they can only improve moving forward. They are both reliable scoring options, can get their teammates involved, and are capable of showing up when the team needs it the most. Their games compliment each other well and the both could clearly play together.

Ball was able to take home the Rookie of the Year award and showed several flashes of superstar potential. Having a talented guard in the backcourt with Ball will be beneficial for him as he continues to grow.

Scary Hours

Scary Terry has had a few clutch moments in his career, but a bulk of them came from last season. Even if he struggled mightily throughout the game, he always found a way to come up big when the Hornets needed it the most. In the clutch, Terry Rozier shot 50 percent from the field, 40 percent from deep, and 80 percent from the stripe. He is the only player to do so with 55 attempts or more.

A majority of the leagues All-Stars fail to drag their respective teams to wins in clutch time. Having a guy who has the guts to take the shot is half the battle, but when they are hitting shots with the game on the line, you have to retain him.

Part of the plan

The Terry Rozier extension is all about the grand scheme of things. He has played well enough to warrant this kind of cash and the hope of the organization is that he continues to put up those kind of numbers for the next five years. However, this was the smartest move for them. The Hornets are not a hot free agent destination, so locking in a productive player was a smart move on their part. It is better than just letting him walk away at then end of this season for nothing. Assuming that the Rozier will continue to produce at a high level, more free agents could flock to come play with him and Ball in the near future.

The Hornets did throw cash at Gordon Hayward last season, so they might have put themselves in a little bit of a tight spot to sign other big names in future free agency summers. Still, they are in a good spot for the future. Rozier and Hayward are likely to stay productive alongside LaMelo.

If they do, that could increase their trade value if the Hornets do decide to make any moves for a bigger name. Even if they do decide to keep their big fishes, they can stay competitive and make the postseason for the next few years. Either way, its a win-win situation to resign Terry Rozier for the long haul. But hey, you be the judge.
