It’s been nearly 2 years since the release of The Last of Us Part II. After the events that took place in the second game of the franchise, fans have been wondering what’s next? Naughty Dog confirms during the Summer Game Fest 2022 that a new The Last of Us Multiplayer title is coming out.

The Last of Us director Neil Druckmann confirmed that the new multiplayer title will be a standalone game. TLOU Multiplayer will have a brand new story and a set of new characters. While he didn’t really mention it, we’re assuming that the storyline for the upcoming game will no longer involve Ellie. Especially considering that the game isn’t a direct sequel to TLOU Part II plus it’ll be more multiplayer oriented.

According to Druckmann’s Twitter post, TLOU Multiplayer will be Naughty Dog’s “biggest online multiplayer experience”. With that being said, it’s more likely that the game will be a live service title rather than just another couch party game. We currently don’t have any other additional information so we’ll just have to wait for more updates by next year.

There are several ways Naughty Dog can create an online multiplayer game for The Last of Us. It’s either they take inspiration from the Left 4 Dead franchise or reinvent Call of Duty’s zombie mode. However, if Druckmann says that it’ll be the “biggest online multiplayer experience”, a battle royale game could be the direction they’re going for. Who knows? For now, we’ll just have to wait ‘til next for further updates.
