The player Pacers must sign in 2022 NBA Free Agency
Collin Sexton
Collin Sexton played in all of 11 games last year. He averaged 16 points during that small sample size. His season came to an abrupt end after an injury.
However, people tend to forget how good of a player he has been over the previous couple of years. Sexton averaged 24 points in 2020-2021 with Cleveland and estbalished himself as a star in the league. He features point guard instincts but fits well at shooting guard. There is an element of versatility to his game that often goes unnoticed.
Naturally, the Cavaliers would like to bring him back. He was their leader over the past few seasons and Cleveland has playoff aspirations. But there isn’t much room on the roster with Caris LeVert and Darius Garland manning the backcourt.
The Cavs would either have to operate with a consistent small-ball lineup or utilize one of Sexton or LeVert off the bench. And neither of them would jump at that idea.
This all leads to the Pacers. Collin Sexton might be a good fit for Indiana under one specific circumstance.
The path to the Pacers
The Indiana Pacers are rumored to have interest in dealing Malcom Brogdon away in addition to Myles Turner, per HoopsHype. Brogdon should draw interest given that he has averaged right around 20 points per game on 45 percent field goal shooting over the past two seasons. He is also a consistent playmaker, as Brogdon has averaged exactly 5.9 assists over the past two years.
So Indiana should be able to receive a solid haul in return for Brogdon. And trading him would open the door for signing Collin Sexton. It should be noted that Sexton is a restricted free agent. But for the aforementioned reasons, it is yet to be seen if the Cavaliers would meet a large offer on the free agent market.
But is Collin Sexton truly a good fit in Indiana? Or would the Pacers simply be adding a good player in hopes it all works out?
Sexton’s NBA experience would be vital for this youthful Pacers team. He could emerge as a leader despite only being 23 years old. Tyrese Haliburton and Bennedict Mathurin would benefit from Sexton’s presence.
And Sexton could instantly become the star for Indiana on offense. Both Haliburton and Sexton are versatile from a positional perspective. So the Pacers could utilize both players in a two-guard set. They realistically could both operate as point guard type of players.
Regardless of how the Pacers opt to use them, Collin Sexton would fit in on this team. And he is a player the Pacers must try and sign in 2022 NBA freee agency. His talent could help Indiana reach the next level in 2022-2023.
