Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers and Kansas City Chiefs gunslinger Patrick Mahomes have emerged as the favorites to win the league MVP award for the 2020 NFL season. Rodgers is currently seeing one of his best statistical seasons while journeying in the 16th campaign of his illustrious career while Mahomes managed to bounce back after a subpar regular season campaign back in 2019 and has been his dominant self ever since.

However, the entire league was reminded of Rodgers' capabilities once again as he showed out in their Week 16 rout against the Tennessee Titans. The two-time NFL MVP impressed with 231 passing yards on 21-of-25 passes completed along with four touchdowns. Wide receiver Davante Adams stepped up and came out with a monster performance of 142 receiving yards on 11 catches and three touchdowns of his own.

Matching up against a playoff team headed by a star rusher in Derrick Henry, the Packers operated on both ends of the field and limited their capable opponents en route to snagging a 40-14 victory to improve to a 12-3 record.

Meanwhile, Mahomes and the Chiefs recently struggled to get past the lowly Atlanta Falcons in Week 16 action. The former Texas Tech standout generated 278 passing yards on an inefficient 24-of-44 passing clip along with two touchdowns. Tight end Travis Kelce chipped in with 98 yards on seven catches and a touchdown while wide receiver Demarcus Robinson added 29 yards on two catches for a score on the endzone.

Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs held their breath as Falcons kicker Younghoe Koo, who has been superb all season long, surprisingly missed the game-tying field goal which ultimately gave away the 17-14 win to the reigning Super Bowl champions. Despite the ugly win, the Chiefs still managed to preserve their 10-game winning streak to hold a 14-1 overall record heading to Week 17 of the season.

While it may have only been a bad game for the Chiefs, Rodgers still showed all throughout the season why he should get the nod over Mahomes for the league MVP award. Heading to Week 1 back in September, the 37-year-old has been speculated to be on his way out of Wisconsin (and possibly retiring) after the team drafted Utah State quarterback Jordan Love with the 26th pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

The selection may have been an insult to Aaron Rodgers who has willingly spent the entirety of his career playing for the smallest team in the NFL. However, he can't give much of an argument as he also found himself in the same situation back then when he was drafted with the 24th pick in the 2005 NFL Draft in a bid to replace then-quarterback Brett Favre.

While the team's issue on their overall lack of weapons still persisted, Rodgers didn't complain and allowed his actions to do the talking for him instead. However, the improvement of his receiving corps has also been key for his emergence this season.

Adams has already been a steady force for Aaron Rodgers in recent seasons but wide receiver Allen Lazard, pass-catcher Equanimeous St. Brown, and tight end Robert Tonyan have all stepped up their game compared to last season in order to give their quarterback a chance to prove his worth on the field.

Not to mention the rushing duo of running back Aaron Jones and rookie A.J. Dillon who both gave the team more options to lean on, given the thin rotation on their aerial attack.

On the other hand, Mahomes has a stacked roster available at his disposal headlined by tight end Travis Kelce who is ranked the second-best in the league with 1,416 receiving yards through 15 games played. He also has a plethora of options in the trio of Tyreek Hill, Mecole Hardman, and Sammy Watkins along with running backs Le'Veon Bell and Darrel Williams.

Hypothetically speaking, it would be hard to imagine if Mahomes would become as successful as he is today if he was in the position of Rodgers and playing alongside the roster that the Packers have. On the other hand, Rodgers would certainly do more on the field if he was placed in the Chiefs' roster surrounded by all the quality weapons around him.

In terms of statistics, Mahomes has the upper hand with total tallies of 4,740 passing yards on 588 attempts and 38 touchdowns through 15 games played with the Chiefs holding a 14-1 record. Meanwhile, Rodgers has accumulated 4,059 yards on 502 attempts along with 44 touchdowns in 15 appearances to lead the Packers with a 12-3 tally.

Patrick Mahomes may have done more but it is also hard to not give Aaron Rodgers the award after sticking through with the team despite all that has happened in the offseason. He has successfully carried the Packers back to contention year-in and year-out which spoiled the fans to get used to his excellence even at this stage in his career, ala LeBron James.

It will certainly be a tight race between the two prolific quarterbacks but Aaron Rodgers gets my vote for simply maximizing the players that he has at his disposal and proving that he can still compete with the best while in his 16th year in the league.
