Why The Tigers Will Cover The Spread/Win

The Tigers will hand the ball to Jack Flaherty and he is having a good season. He has a 3.84 ERA, but his xERA is just 2.77. Along with that, Flaherty has a WHIP of 1.08. He does a great job keeping batters off base, and his xERA suggests opposing teams are getting a tad lucky against him. Flaherty has also been able to whiff and strike out at a high rate. His stuff has been gross, and teams are having a lot of trouble against him. If he can continue to pitch like that, he is going to lead the Tigers to a win to open up the series at Fenway Park.

Boston has the sixth-highest whiff rate in the MLB. They also have the 12th-highest swing percentage and 11th-highest chase percentage. The Red Sox will get themselves into trouble, and get themselves out at the plate. This is going to work to the strengths of Flaherty. I would not be surprised to see a high strikeout game from the Tigers starting pitchers here. I am also expecting Flaherty to go deep into this game. Because of this, the Tigers have a great chance to win Thursday night.

Why The Red Sox Will Cover The Spread/Win

Boston has to be able to hit, and they do that. Despite their tendency to chase some pitches and whiff, the Red Sox are still 13th in the MLB in batting average. The Red Sox are also top-10 in slugging percentage, barrel percentage, and hard hit percentage. One thing that gets Flaherty into trouble is home runs. He has allowed nine this season. If the Red Sox get their pitch in the zone, they will not miss it. If they can take advantage of the mistakes over the plate, the Red Sox will win this game.

Boston has Pivetta on the mound, and he is having a pretty good season. Pivetta has an ERA over 4.00, but his WHIP is 1.07. Pivetta does not walk hitters, so you can expect him to go right after the Tigers lineup. The Tigers are just average at the plate this season, so it is going to be tough for them to get things going against Pivetta. As long as Pivetta pitches his game, and keeps the Tigers from getting too many extra-base hits, the Red Sox will win this game.

Final Tigers-Red Sox Prediction & Pick

This should be a good game, but I do love what Flaherty has been able to do. For that reason, I am going to take the Tigers to win this game straight up.
