Jadeveon Clowney entered the offseason as one of the biggest free agents available. However, the days turned into weeks, and those turned into months. And here we are in the middle of June and Clowney is still available. The end may soon be near, however. Mike Moraitis of Titans Wire reports that the Tennessee Titans' radio announcer, Mike Keith, believes the team has a “real chance” to sign the pass rusher.
“Tennessee Titans radio announcer Mike Keith believes “there’s a real chance” the team could still sign Jadeveon Clowney in free agency.
“Clowney continues to wait for the right time to sign with one of his suitors, and Titans general manager Jon Robinson continues to make it clear the team is still keeping an eye on the situation.
“On NFL Network, Keith made the case that Clowney signing in Nashville makes sense and could still happen with the Titans having about $19.3 million in cap space left.
“‘Oh, I think there’s a real chance because the Titans have cap room, they certainly have a connection from Mike Vrabel’s time in Houston' Keith explained. ‘They have other connections within the team that are reaching out to him — Johnathan Joseph, former teammate from the same hometown, Taylor Lewan reaching out on social media, other players saying they’d love to have him. If you’re Clowney, the Titans certainly make sense if the dollars make sense … but the Titans have clearly left the door open publicly that they have interest in Clowney. Now, will what they want to pay and what he wants to get paid match up? That I don’t have any idea, but I wouldn’t rule the Titans out in this, no.'”
It should be noted that Keith is not claiming to have any behind the scenes knowledge of the situation.
He is just telling it how he sees it. The Titans could use the help in the pass rushing game. They also have the cap room for the move, and head coach Mike Vrabel has a connection with Clowney.
So there is a fit, a need and enough money to make it happen. Keith certainly is not wrong that there is a real chance that the Titans could indeed sign Clowney this offseason.
