Although they failed to make the postseason for the first time since 2013, the Dallas Mavericks are planning on ending their season in style by adding a key member to their bench for their final regular season game. According to ESPN's Marc Stein, the Mavs will honor recently retired Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo on Tuesday by making him a “Maverick for a day.”

This is not a joke. Romo will be in a Mavs uniform, warm up with the team and then sit on the bench throughout the game. However, Romo won't actually play as he will be there mainly to add a bit more fun and levity to Dallas' final home game of the regular season.

From Stein:

Sources told ESPN.com that the Mavericks intend to have Romo on the bench and in uniform for their final regular-season home date against the Denver Nuggets as a means of paying tribute to the longtime former Cowboy.

The Mavericks plan to treat him like an actual player on the roster for the day, sources said, even though Romo won't actually play in the game. He last played competitive basketball in high school in Wisconsin.

After 14 seasons with the Cowboys, Romo announced his retirement earlier this week and will transition to a television analyst role for CBS Sports during the NFL season. Romo is held in high regard in Dallas and had several successful seasons with the Cowboys but injuries ultimately limited his career.

And while this is all mainly for publicity, the Mavs choosing to honor Romo by having him on their bench is a fun tribute and is one that will add a bit more excitement to an otherwise meaningless end of season game.
