The Minnesota Twins are set to host the Houston Astros for a three-game series beginning on Tuesday, although Carlos Correa may not be available to play in the opener against his former team.

Correa has been sidelined since being hit in the finger by a pitch during the Twins’ May 7 road matchup against the Baltimore Orioles. Even though there was early concern that the two-time All-Star would go on to be ruled out for at least a month, CT scan results on the following day revealed no fracture in his right middle finger.

The Twins had initially planned on having Correa feature in batting practice ahead of their series finale against the Oakland Athletics on Sunday. However, he did not swing a bat on the day due to the soreness on his finger but rather continued to receive treatment for his injury.

Overall, Correa noted on Sunday that his finger injury has not quite healed as was first expected.

“I thought [his sore finger] would heal faster, but it’s not quite there yet,” Correa said.

Correa further added that he plans to take dry swings on Monday, and for the moment, he believes that it is not realistic that he would be cleared to return to the lineup by the series opener against Houston on Tuesday.

The Twins shortstop began to turn the corner on his season prior to suffering the finger injury. In his previous eight games, he hit .412 and recorded eight RBI.

The Twins have not missed a step in Correa’s absence, as they swept Oakland in their three-game series. They currently bolster the best record in the AL Central with an 18-11 standing.
