NBA Hall-of-Famer Bill Walton is no stranger to speaking his mind in colorful ways, even while doing his day job of being a college basketball broadcaster for ESPN. Walton was on hand to call the UCLA-Georgia Tech game in China, which obviously had a huge elephant in the room surrounding it after the actions of LiAngelo Ball and two other UCLA students who were arrested for shoplifting.

It was only a matter of time before Walton would address said elephant. As it turns out, he couldn’t even wait for the game to officially begin before going on a half-minute-long speech about the entire incident concerning ball and his teammates.

“I am sad, disappointed, and embarrassed. This is a very big deal. The noble purpose here has been stained. Our host, Alibaba China, the people, they have been better than perfect in everything. They've done everything right to make this all work. Now, members of our family displayed an appalling lack of honor, lack of respect, lack of decency, by doing something in someone else's home that they would never do in their own. And I want to apologize right now on behalf of the human race for this travesty.”

It should be noted that Walton is a UCLA alum and legend, which is why this situation is a bit nearer and dearer to his heart. But while Walton’s comments about having a “noble purpose” in China and sucking up to their “perfect” hosts, Alibaba, were well off base, his thoughts on the actual incident were warranted.

What LiAngelo Ball and his teammates did as representatives of UCLA in another country was highly disrespectful and stupid and they deserve to be punished for it. It’s not quite the travesty to the human race as Walton says, but it’s still pretty bad.
