The Los Angeles Chargers pulled off a stunner in the last NFL Thursday Night Football game of the season and that’s in no small part because of wide receiver Mike Williams, who had an explosive performance against the Chiefs in a close 29-28 victory at Arrowhead Stadium.
The Chiefs looked like they were on their way to pocketing another win, as they kicked off the fourth quarter holding a sizeable, though, modestly precarious 14-point lead against the dangerous Chargers. But Los Angeles rolled up its sleeves on both ends of the field and outscored the Chiefs in the final period, 15-7. The Chargers leaned on back-to-back touchdowns late in the game by running back Justin Jackson and Mike Williams to get them back into the thick of things.
Williams caught a pass from quarterback Philip Rivers on a first-and-goal game situation and with the Chargers behind by seven points with four seconds remaining in regulation to cut Kansas City’s lead down to one.
But instead of choosing the conservative route of kicking an extra-point following Williams’ third touchdown of the night to send the contest into a likely overtime, the Chargers went for two, perhaps emboldened by how terrific Mike Williams was playing all night long. Their audacity was then immediately rewarded, as the Chiefs egregiously forgot to cover Williams, who was left alone for the go-ahead and game-winning two-point score.
Williams finished the game with 76 receiving yards, two receiving touchdowns, and a rushing score, to help the Chargers compensate the absences of Melvin Gordon (knee), Austin Ekeler (neck), and the limited participation of Keenan Allen (hip).
With the win, the Chargers have tied the Chiefs atop the AFC West, as both teams now share an identical 11-record.
