Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson entered the Week 18 home matchup against the Chicago Bears with a golden opportunity to make history.

Jefferson notched an astounding 1,509 receiving yards over the Vikings' opening 16 games of the campaign. The former LSU star simply formed stout chemistry with quarterback Kirk Cousins.

Overall, Jefferson needed a mere 124 receiving yards to break Randy Moss’ record (1,632 in 2003) for the most such yards in a season in Vikings franchise history.

In the end, Jefferson came up a mere 17 receiving yards short from topping this historic leaderboard. The second-year wideout finished with five receptions for 107 receiving yards in the Vikings’ 31-17 win over the Bears.

In his post-game press conference, Cousins did note that he “wanted to get Justin that record,” but overall, what matters to him is the final score.

“He understands as a professional the win comes first,” Cousins said.

As expected, Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer shared these same feelings as well.

“I don't care about records,” Zimmer said. “All I care about is wins.”

While Jefferson fell a bit short of reaching this feat, he did make plenty of history in his sophomore campaign with the Vikings. For one, he set the records for the most receptions (196) and receiving yards (3,016) by a wide receiver in his opening two seasons in the NFL.

Even as major changes may be coming in the upcoming offseason for the Vikings, they can at the least feel assured that they have one of the more dynamic wideouts in the league.
