With the 2017 NFL season officially in the books for the Minnesota Vikings, they must now prepare to start shifting gears toward the offseason. Aside from their looming quarterback situation, the Vikings have questions to answer in their backfield as well.

Running back Jerick McKinnon's rookie deal is set to expire and he will become a free agent this summer. According to Courtney Cronin of ESPN, McKinnon plans to sign with whatever team is willing to make him the lead back:

“I want to be the guy,” McKinnon said. “I don’t put in all the work in the offseason to come back and be in this role. I appreciate the role. It worked out well, but I want bigger and better things for myself.”

Although he did not rule out a return to Minnesota, McKinnon determined that a lot would need to factor into his decision to stay.

“We’ll see what happens,” McKinnon said. “There’s a lot of things that go into that whole situation that can be determining factors: offensive schemes, financial reasons. It’ll be a lot to sit down and think about, but it will be a fun time to experience it.”

However, he failed to make the most of his increased touches and ultimately wound up splitting backfield duties with running back Latavius Murray. As a result, it seems McKinnon may need to find new home with Minnesota likely planning to hand the keys back to Cook next season.
