Rumors began to swirl on social media that WWE owner Vince McMahon would be revitalizing his XFL baby. That a league that loved to not shy away from the violence would return to the free-world.

Are these rumors true?

Welp. It is slightly complicated, but the answer isn't a for sure no.

First, it is worth noting that Vince McMahon has been pretty honest about wishing he could one day reboot the XFL.

From ESPN's 30 for 30 XFL doc:

“Do you ever have any thoughts about trying again?” Dick Ebersol asks McMahon.

“Yes I do,” McMahon replies. “I don’t know what it would be. I don’t know if it’s gonna be another XFL or what it may be or how different I would make it. It seems like in some way it would tie in either with the NFL itself or the owners.”

“I don’t know what it would be,” McMahon once opined. “I don’t know if it’s gonna be another XFL or what it may be or how different I would make it. It seems like in some way it would tie in either with the NFL itself or the owners.”

Here is where things get trickier. Here is a statement the WWE sent David Bixenpan of Deadspin:

That doesn't address what Bixenspan was asking, but it doesn't deny that the league would be making a return either.

A lot of cloak and dagger stuff for what appears to be a simple question about whether or not the XFL would be returning under either the WWE or McMahon's control.

Worth noting, obviously, that this can all be a work of sorts or that McMahon might use the property as a commodity, even if only in name/library footage, to sell.

More bluntly put: No one has any idea what is going on other than rumors began, but never died down. At least not yet.
