Liverpool had quite a minor injury scare during its 2022 FA Cup Final win over Chelsea on Saturday.

Liverpool center-back Virgil van Dijk was subbed off in the last minutes of normal time due to an apparent knee injury. The veteran Dutch defender was able to walk off the pitch on his own power, and manager Jurgen Klopp opted to sub in Joel Matip to replace him for the extra time session.

In speaking after Liverpool’s penalty shootout win against Chelsea, van Dijk provided an update on his knee ailment, where he noted that he simply could not risk worsening his injury during the late stages of the contest.

“We’re going to check it out,” van Dijk said. “I felt in the first half when I sprinted, I felt a twinge behind my knee, I played on. In the end, I can’t risk it for the team and I need to trust Joel. Hopefully it will be fine.”

van Dijk further added that he could not “fully sprint” after suffering the minor injury. More so, Klopp did mention following the match that the Dutch international is “fine,” although it is currently not likely that the center-back will be ready to feature in Liverpool’s upcoming Premier League away fixture against Southampton.

Liverpool now has a mere three matches remaining on its schedule this season, which include the 2022 UEFA Champions League Final clash with Real Madrid coming later this month.
