Puma is diving back into basketball and Golden State Warriors star DeMarcus Cousins is the latest star that the clothing company is targeting. Puma offered what is being described as “a lucrative multi-year shoe deal” and this shows Puma's desire to gain a greater foothold on the basketball market.

Nike does have the ability to match the offer, but it's unclear whether or not they will.

If Puma's attempt to sign Cousins is successful, he will undoubtedly be the face of the brand's basketball division. Thus far, Puma has emphasized signing young players that have the potential to become stars rather than established NBA studs. Cousins would be the top dog for Puma.

He would join a roster of players that includes Rudy Gay, Deandre Ayton, Kevin Knox, Skylar Diggins-Smith, Terry Rozier, Marvin Bagley III, Michael Porter Jr., and Zhaire Smith. Gay and Rozier are the only NBA veterans on the roster and Diggins-Smith is a veteran of the WNBA, but the rest of the Puma roster consists of rookies.

Knox, Ayton, Bagley, and Porter are all potential superstars and Puma is hoping they develop into the biggest ones in the game. Something similar could be said for Rozier.

But Puma is clearly looking to make plays for bigger names and established stars. Cousins is one of the most eccentric personalities in the league. Not to mention, he's one of the best big men in basketball when he's healthy. Add in the fact that he plays for the Warriors — one of basketball's must-watch teams — and Cousins seems like a great fit for the direction Puma is heading.
