Klay Thompson lit Staples Center ablaze with another third quarter for the history books, draining 3-pointer after 3-pointer to incinerate the Los Angeles Lakers for 44 points on 17-of-20 shooting from the floor and an incandescent 10-of-11 from beyond the arc. Asked about what ignited his performance, the Golden State Warriors guard admitted he was “a little bit” motivated by a Christmas Day loss to the Lakers.

“I don’t know. I was having one of those nights,” said Thompson, according to Ryan Ward of ClutchPoints. “It’s the best percentage I’ve ever shot, but it just happened to be one of those nights. It’s hard to explain it.”

Thompson tied the NBA record for most consecutive triples to start a game while also tying the best 3-point percentage mark in league history with 90.9 percent. His effective field goal percentage of 1.100 is now the highest in NBA history in a game with at least 15 shots, according to ESPN Stats & Info.

The Warriors sniper struggled in the first half of the season, shooting very close to 30 percent during the starting stretch of this 2018-19 campaign. Thompson entered this game shooting a respectable but out-of-character 36.5 percent from 3, only to boost that to a rousing 38.2 percent after a night of fireworks.

Thompson has managed to hit at a 40.0 percent clip from deep in each of his prior seven NBA seasons. Doing so again seems well within the realm of possibility, especially after shooting a scorching 50.6 percent from beyond the arc since the start of the calendar year.
