The Washington Redskins came into the 2018 NFL season with optimism. However, they ended up disappointing, only going 7-9 on the season and finishing third in the NFC East Division.

The Redskins were in first place in the NFC East when Smith broke his right leg. It happened during the third quarter of a home game against the Houston Texans. Smith was hurried to the hospital for emergency surgery on his fibula and tibia.

Smith was then replaced by very subpar players. Colt McCoy got hurt, Mark Sanchez was just terrible, and then they signed Josh Johnson practically off the street. The fact that they even won some games is remarkable. Their lack of talent under center showed and is a huge reason why they didn't make a playoff run.

Smith signed a huge four-year, $94 million contract extension with the Redskins this past year. The Chiefs had just traded him away to make space for Patrick Mahomes, who ironically enough has become a generational talent. Smith is on par to make around $42 million in guaranteed money over the next two seasons and is still a huge financial commitment.

That being said, Smith's career isn’t over quite yet. Thankfully, with modern technology, Smith should have every opportunity to get back on the field. His ability to scramble might be a hindered, but he should find a way to overcome that.

Dan Snyder and the Redskins organization need to find a replacement for Smith in the short-term. There are not a lot of options on the free agent market that are cheap. Both Nick Foles and Teddy Bridgewater are going to make starter money, and the Redskins need something that's cheap and temporary.

They could take a quarterback in the draft, but that's not a consistent option. The three expected to go in the first round, Dwayne Haskins of Ohio State, Kyler Murray of Oklahoma, and Daniel Jones of Duke could be viable options, but Smith is their quarterback of the future. They need to focus on bringing in a veteran to replace him.

The Denver Broncos just traded for Joe Flacco from the Baltimore Ravens. John Elway is likely to trade last year's starting quarterback for some assets. Case Keenum would be a perfect temporary replacement.

His experience as a starter in Denver wasn't great, but was serviceable. After throwing 22 touchdowns and seven interceptions in 2017, Keenum threw for 18 touchdowns and 15 interceptions in 2018.

His addition to the team would provide stability. It would be an excellent decision for the team, as well as cost-efficient moving forward.
