We can all now forget about the Resident Evil films starring Milla Jovovich. That's all in the past now. Director Johannes Roberts has made sure that the reboot film will be much closer to the source material, with the tone and themes reflecting more of the games than the previous films ever had combined.

In Welcome to Raccoon City‘s initial trailer, we see that much of the film draws direct inspiration from the games. In fact, the film's premise combines the plots of the two of the first three games – two games that were set within roughly the same time frame. So far, the trailer has shown us that the film roughly follows the events in the games closely. Hence, it might feel like watching the game unfold in the form of a film. There won't be any plot hijinx, so there's really nothing to be surprised about.

This closeness to the source material is both a boon and a curse for Welcome to Raccoon City, as it will now have to meet even stricter expectations from longtime fans. Attention to detail will be very important. Furthermore, it's going to be a real challenge to give the audience a real fright in spite of many of them already knowing what will happen. How can you give someone a scare if they already know all of the spooky stuff?

While the Resident Evil community has been divided with this new trailer, we're excited to see how things will pan out. Resident Evil Welcome to Raccoon City premieres in theaters November 24, 2021.
