The San Francisco Giants are pushing to stay afloat in the competitive NL West. However, the team is dearly missing the services of Blake Snell amid his injury bout. Giants manager Bob Melvin provided an update on the star pitcher's status amid his numerous woes.

On June 3rd, San Francisco placed Snell on the 15-day injured list. This was one day after he left during an at-bat in the fifth inning against the New York Yankees. The ordeal marked the second time Snell was placed on the IL during the 2024 season. He missed 25 games with a left adductor strain in April.

Bob Melvin revealed that Snell threw three ups and downs in another bullpen on June 18th, and the session went well, per MLB.com. Furthermore, the Giants are planning on Snell's next step to be pitching in “some kind of game,” according to Melvin. However, the team is still determining the details.

Hopefully, Blake Snell will continue to have a smooth return from injury. Through six games, the 31-year-old left-hander possesses a 0-3 record and has thrown 31 strikeouts. In addition, he holds a 9.51 ERA along with 1.94 WHIP. Snell has not had the start he hoped for with the Giants.

The former San Diego Padres star signed with San Francisco during the free agency period after a lengthy testing period. Snell was one of the best MLB pitchers in 2023. He led the league in ERA at 2.25 and ranked third in strikeouts (225). Moreover, he achieved a W-L of 14-9 and averaged 1.19 WHIP. As a result, he won his second Cy Young Award.

The Giants are hoping Snell will return healthy and bolster their pitching lineup. SF has aspirations to climb the NL West, but it has not been easy.

Snell understands the work necessary to overcome his injury woes. He revealed the areas he needed to improve to prevent his groin injury from resurfacing after he exited June 2nd's game against the Yankees.

“What I'm doing, I've got to change something or add something,” Snell said, via ESPN. “Definitely got to add something strengthening-wise that I haven't been doing so that I can get the muscle even more prepared for 100 pitches a game. Got a lot to learn, but definitely got to get stronger and make sure this stops happening.”

It appears Snell's rehab process is going well, given Bob Melvin's earlier update. Melvin initially predicted that Snell would be back within a few weeks after the injury. Fans could see him return in late June. SF's other defensive contributors will hold things down while the star pitcher recovers.

Logan Webb and Jordan Hicks have been highly serviceable for the Giants so far during the 2024 season. Through 16 appearances, Webb leads SF's starting pitchers in wins (6) and strikeouts (83). Both marks are top 30 MLB rankings. Meanwhile, Hicks leads the team with a 2.65 ERA through his 15 appearances, which ranks him 11th in the league.

San Francisco possesses a 36-39 record, which places them fourth in the NL West standings. They are approaching a pivotal series against the Arizona Cardinals for a chance to climb the division.
