Serena Williams made her long awaited return to the game of tennis Tuesday. She found herself facing off against Harmony Tan in the first round at Wimbledon. Tan is the 115th ranked player in the world. Even though Serena had not played a singles match in 364 days, she was still a heavy favorite. Unfortunately for the all-time great, Williams was upset by the Tan 5-7, 6-1, 6-7 (10-7), probably surprising to Tan.
After the match, Serena Williams sat down for her press conference posted by The Tennis Channel. She left many wondering what her future will be. She was asked point blank, “what do you want to do now.” Williams response was non-committal. After being asked if this was her last time playing at Wimbledon, Williams gave an interesting answer: “Who knows where I'll pop up”.
Serena Williams is 40 years old and turns 41 this September. So, if she were to return to Wimbledon next year, she would almost be 42 years old. Tennis has always been regarded as a young person's sport. That is, until the most recent generation of talent including Williams, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.
Tuesday's match was incredible to watch. It last three hours and 11 minutes long, as both players had opportunities to take the win. Williams fought off a match point in the third set, and found herself serving for the match. She was broken that game, eventually heading to a tiebreak.
Serena jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the tiebreak, but went on to lose 10 of the next 13 points.
If this was the last time tennis fans see her at Wimbledon, at the very least she laid it all out on the court.
