Washington Wizards guard Russell Westbrook is not happy. Well, no one would be if they were on Westbrook's position and poured on popcorn while injured.
Early in the fourth quarter of Game 2 between the Wizards and Philadelphia 76ers, Westbrook sustained a leg injury that forced him out of the game. As he was exiting the court and heading to the locker room, a Sixers fan appeared to intentionally pour popcorn on him.
Of course, the Wizards guard got so mad and wanted to confront the perpetrator before he had to be restrained by the staff around him
In his postgame presser, Westbrook addressed the incident and sent a clear message to the NBA to do something and protect the players.
“I wouldn’t come up to me on the street and throw popcorn on my head, because you know what happens…In these arenas, you gotta start protecting the players. We’ll see what the NBA does,” Russell Westbrook said, per Fred Katz of The Athletic.
Russell Westbrook has every right to be angry after being subjected to such disrespect, and given the seriousness of the issue, the NBA is expected to address it.
For what it's worth, Wizards head coach Scott Brooks already called for the NBA and the Sixers to ban the culprit to show that they won't be tolerating such acts. Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James echoed the same sentiments and asked the league to show players the video of the person who threw the popcorn.
It remains to be seen how the league will handle the matter, but fans should expect a statement and action sooner rather than later.
