Washington Wizards star Bradley Beal is poised to become an unrestricted free agent this summer rather than sign an extension right now with the team that drafted him. While there is always the possibility he takes his talents elsewhere, with the Sixers clearly showing interest in him, the Wizards are ready to roll the dice and take a chance on their franchise star deciding to stay in DC.

Beal was part of the decision to trade Westbrook last summer and was a lead recruiter in bringing in free agent Spencer Dinwiddie, team sources said. Beal and his family have forged a close relationship with new teammate Kentavious Caldwell-Pope.
Washington has another significant advantage.
A primary reason Beal isn't extending now is because with such a contract he could fashion a four-year deal worth $181 million. If he opts out and signs a totally new agreement, the Wizards can offer five years and $241 million. If he were to leave to go to another team this summer, his max deal would be four years and $179 million.
In short: If Beal is prioritizing guaranteed money, he has a $60 million incentive to stay.
This certainly feels like a win-win for the Wizards and Beal. He could explore his options elsewhere, but if the veteran really wants to secure the bag, staying in Washington is the only logical decision. Another $60 million in guaranteed money is a lot and that will likely make a huge difference in Beal's decision.
The Wizards have built around Beal for several years now and even enjoyed a hot start this season. They've cooled off since however and currently sit at just 23-21. As Windhorst pointed out, the team's confidence in Beal ultimately staying put will play a key part in just how active they are at the February 10th NBA Trade Deadline.
Beal has made it very clear that he wants to see the Wizards add more pieces around him in order to make them a legitimate contender in the East. That could also play a part in Beal agreeing to an extension later this year or not.
