Former Georgia Senator Kelly Loeffler has finally completed her sale of WNBA franchise the Atlanta Dream.

Shams Charania of The Athletic reported Loeffler, a co-owner of the Dream, reached an agreement to sell the team to a “three-member” investor group including former Dream star Renee Montgomery.

A sale of the WNBA franchise has been in the works for months.

Dream players were adamantly opposed to Loeffler's ownership, who last summer voiced opposition to the Black Lives Matter movement. Her words naturally drew the ire of the players, who immediately called for her removal as co-owner, as did the WNBA Players Association.

The players also threw their support behind Democratic candidate Raphael Warnock during the special run-off for Georgia's senatorial seats, wearing “Vote Warnock” shirts and mobilizing voters in the state. Warnock won with 51 percent of the vote, as victories by he and Jon Ossoff flipped the Senate.

Montgomery was among those to ridicule Kelly Loeffler, scrutinizing comments made by the former Senator after the then WNBA said Black Americans openly carrying of firearms would lead to “mob rule.”

Now, Montgomery will have the chance to set a new course for the franchise.

The identities of the other members of the ownership group remain unknown, though it seems unlikely LeBron James is among them. James had hinted at putting together an ownership group at the time of the run-off elections. But there had been little noise on that front in the past couple months.

In any event, the Dream are finally under new ownership after months of protest from almost everyone involved with the WNBA.
