The New York Yankees have a decision to make regarding the future of flame-throwing closer Aroldis Chapman. The left-handed is set to see his contract with the club expire this offseason, and with free agency looming, no new deal has been agreed upon. Per Brendan Kuty, Chapman revealed Monday that he and the Yankees have yet to even begin negotiations over a new deal, despite his desires to remain in The Bronx.

Chapman admitted the Yankees had not approached him over a potential extension as of yet before going on to declare that he wants to remain with the team. Whether or not the Yankees have a mutual interest in re-upping with the 34-year-old remains to be seen, though he'll be ready if they do come to the table with an offer.

Last season, Chapman recorded a 3.36 ERA with 97 strikeouts and 30 saves across 56.1 innings of work. Despite recording his highest strikeout tally since making the move to New York in 2016, Chapman surrendered a troubling 9 home runs and saw his ERA rise for the second consecutive season. The 3.36 ERA was his worst since 2011, his second year in MLB, and the 9 home runs were more than he'd surrendered from 2017 to 2019 combined.

In 2020, Chapman signed a three-year, $48 million deal with the Yankees. In 2022, the 34-year-old is making $18 million in what is the final year of his contract ahead of free agency. It's clear Chapman would prefer to avoid hitting the open market altogether, but it remains to be seen if the Yankees are as motivated to keep him in town going forward.
