The New York Yankees haven't won a World Series since 2009. As one of the most storied franchises in all of baseball, they've been heavily criticized for years because of their failures in October.

However, in 2017, they had a legitimate chance of making the Fall Classic and capturing a title if it wasn't for the Houston Astros spoiling their party with their cheating scandal, according to Yankees GM Brian Cashman. In fact, he's still pissed about it to this day.

Via The Athletic:

“The only thing that stopped (us) was something that was so illegal and horrific,” Cashman told The Athletic. “So I get offended when I start hearing we haven't been to the World Series since '09. Because I’m like, ‘Well, I think we actually did it the right way.' Pulled it down, brought it back up. Drafted well, traded well, developed well, signed well. The only thing that derailed us was a cheating circumstance that threw us off.”

The Yankees were 91-71 that season, beating the Minnesota Twins in the AL Wild Card Game before taking out the Cleveland Indians in the ALDS. The ALCS against the Astros was absolutely thrilling too, with Houston eventually coming back from a 3-2 deficit to win the series.

“People are like ‘Oh, we haven't been to a World Series . . .' and I'm like, ‘Yeah, I don't think that's as true a statement as it could be,'” Brian Cashman said. “We had a World Series team. And either you get it done or you don't.”

Looks like someone isn't over the whole scandal. Perhaps, the Yankees can make a World Series run in 2022, but it won't be easy with an extremely stacked American League, particularly in the East division.
