Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez were a part of the legendary New York Yankees dynasty. But, they didn't always get along and their relationship to this day is rocky.

Jeter, who is set to release his ESPN documentary called “The Captain”, detailed the exact moment back in 2001 when he knew A-Rod wasn't a true friend, despite being close prior to his comments. Via TMZ Sports:

Rodriguez, who was very close with Jeter and had just signed a massive contract to play for the Texas Rangers in 2001, told a reporter for the outlet that Derek was “blessed” to play for an absolutely stacked NY team.

“He's never had to lead,” Rodriguez said. “He doesn’t have to, he can just go and play and have fun, and hit second.”

He continued, “I mean, you know, hitting second is totally different than hitting third or fourth in a lineup because you go into New York trying to stop Bernie [Williams] and [Paul] O’Neill and everybody. You never say, ‘Don’t let Derek beat you.’ That’s never your concern.”

Derek Jeter didn't take kindly to the remarks from Rodriguez, making it clear they bothered him.

“I’m very, very loyal,” Jeter said. “As a friend, I’m loyal. I just looked at it as, ‘I wouldn’t have done it.”

Rodriguez did say in the doc he apologized to Jeter, but A-Rod also made a sny comment saying “There isn't one thing he does better than me”, according to The Captain.  That's when Jeter officially cut ties with his former Yankees teammate. Of course, they eventually played together in 2004 but it wasn't all sunshine and rainbows as the duo occupied the left side of the infield in the Bronx.

Alex Rodriguez ultimately accepted the blame for the drama with Derek Jeter, though.

“To allow that opening, that gap, that space to come between Derek and I, that's on me.”
