It's only May and Yankees relievers are already dropping like flies. After losing Luis Gil and Chad Green for the remainder of the season, with both hurlers set for Tommy John surgery, the Yankees also placed Aroldis Chapman on the 15-day IL with Achilles tendinitis. On Wednesday, the bad news continued to pour in, as Jonathan Loaisiga was also placed on the Injured List after experiencing shoulder discomfort, according to Laura Albanese.

That's a brutal blow for the Yankees, who are going to be extremely shorthanded out of the bullpen for the time being. Losing Green and Chapman is already a significant hit, but to be without Loaisiga, who emerged as one of the top relievers in baseball last season, makes matters even worse.

Loaisiga hasn't looked like his usual self in 2022, so perhaps a stint on the IL is needed for him to shake off the rust, but the injury diagnosis couldn't come at a worse time in terms of the Yankees' overall bullpen health. With Chapman, Green, and now Loaisiga all out, the Yankees' bullpen currently consists of Michael King, Clay Holmes, Wandy Peralta, Miguel Castro, and Lucas Luetge.

While roster moves are certainly on the horizon, and bullpen reinforcements will be on the way, it's certainly an uncomfortable position for the Yankees to be in. Loaisiga will be out for at least a couple of weeks, and hopefully when he returns he can turn things around after logging a 7.02 ERA across his first 18 appearances this year. His struggles come on the heels of a 2021 campaign that saw him register a 2.17 ERA across 70.2 innings.
