New York Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman failed to keep things close when called upon in the ninth inning on Sunday in a 1-1 game. He surrendered a leadoff home run to AJ Pollock and allowed one more run across in the inning as the Yankees lost to the White Sox. After the game, manager Aaron Boone revealed that Chapman has been dealing with an apparent injury, for which he's been receiving treatment, via Bryan Hoch.

Boone indicated that Chapman has an Achilles issue that he's been getting treatment on, though the manager did not elaborate on the severity of the ailment. Still, that's a particularly concerning injury for any athlete, and it could be playing into Chapman's struggles on the mound of late.

Chapman has now surrendered at least one earned run in each of his last five outings, having failed to throw a clean inning since May 9 against the Texas Rangers. Over his last five outings, Chapman has managed just 3.2 innings, surrendering a total of 6 earned runs.

His struggles have fans calling for Clay Holmes to be moved into the closer role until the hard-throwing lefty can figure things out. Chapman's Achille could certainly be the culprit behind his recent struggles, but if that's the case, then Boone needs to consider shutting the 34-year-old down for a while, or at least not deploy him in high-leverage situations.

An injury to Chapman would be the last thing the Yankees need, especially after having just lost Luis Gil and Chad Green to Tommy John surgery. Additionally, Joey Gallo and Kyle Higashioka have just been placed on the COVID-19 Injured List, so they will also be temporarily sidelined.
