Veteran outfielder Kole Calhoun is exercising his June 1 opt-out with the New York Yankees and will become a free agent unless the Yankees add him to the MLB roster within 72 hours, according to Jon Morosi of MLB Network.

Kole Calhoun reportedly implemented a swing change with the Yankees in the minor leagues, and posted a .963 OPS at Triple-A, according to Morosi.

It makes sense that Calhoun is opting out of his contract with the Yankees. He has performed well in Triple-A and could have built up some value for himself. The Yankees have also kept both Jake Bauers and Willie Calhoun, who have both performed well recently. Giancarlo Stanton is on the verge of returning as well, and Isiah Kiner-Falefa is performing well in a utility role that puts him in the outfield at times. Aaron Judge is there too, obviously. Harrison Bader just went on the injured list with a hamstring strain, but there just does not seem to be much room for Calhoun in the outfield with the Yankees as of right now.

Calhoun is an 11-year veteran in MLB. He spent most of his years with the Los Angeles Angels, winning a Gold Glove in right field in 2015. Kole Calhoun later went on to play for the Arizona Diamondbacks during the 2020 and 2021 seasons, then played the 2022 season with the Texas Rangers.

It will certainly be intriguing to see if Calhoun can find a landing spot with an MLB team after his successful stint with the Yankees in Triple-A.
