Carlos Correa and the New York Yankees seemed like the perfect fit on paper. Correa was a star shortstop who was destined to command a lot of money and the Yankees like to dish out big money and they needed a shortstop. So when Correa ended up in Minnesota with the Twins, it was quite a shock

However, MLB insider Jon Heyman recently revealed some information as to why New York ultimately passed on Correa.

“The Yankees had a couple things that were going on with Correa that — I don’t know that it was him, necessarily — but he was with Houston. They didn’t love that. He did make that comment about Derek Jeter early in the offseason. They didn’t love that. He was very close to Alex Rodriguez. I’m not sure that he is now. But I don’t think they loved that either, though Alex Rodriguez was the key guy that helped them win their last World Series championship. But he’s not exactly Mr. Popularity around the Yankees now.”

Many teams were weary about signing Correa due to the Astros scandal. But there were more hesitations for the Yankees than that. Correa made comments about Yankees legend Derek Jeter being overrated earlier in the offseason. But his relationship with Alex Rodriguez was seemingly the icing on the cake.

A-Rod was a crucial factor in helping New York win their most recent World Series in 2009. But his reputation with the Yankees has dwindled ever since. The organization and Jeter have remained close but their ties with Rodriguez have gone in the other direction.

In the end, Carlos Correa ended up with the Twins and the Yankees acquired Josh Donaldson and Isaiah Kiner-Falefa to fill their left side of the infield.
