Currently holding the No. 3 pick in this year's NBA draft, the Cleveland Cavaliers have a lot going for them right now. This comes with plenty of opportunities for their front office to explore, specifically how to use this pick as leverage to facilitate a trade. This summer is bound to have plenty of blockbuster trades taking place, but given the Cavs current situation it would actually be more sensible for them to hold onto the no. 3 spot.

It makes sense for them to do this because they have the opportunity to draft a potential star to add to their young and growing core. The Cavs will have their fair share of choices to add another franchise cornerstone with the hopes of getting back to playoff contention. Having said that, let's take a look at the two reasons the Cavaliers should absolutely keep the no. 3 pick in this year's draft.

Cavs NBA draft notes:

They Are Currently Building A Contender

Considering how far the Cavs have fallen since 2018 it's safe to say that a rebuild was inevitable, but with young talent in Collin Sexton, Darius Garland, and Jarrett Allen making strides and coming into their own, this youthful squad may only be a few pieces away from becoming a legit playoff team. Not to mention veteran swingman Larry Nance Jr. who serves as a great mentor to these younger guys and has also become a human highlight reel and efficient mid-range scorer.

Adding the likes of Evan Mobley or Jalen Green to this youthful and athletic group would make the Cavs an exciting lower seed in an ever evolving eastern conference. Especially when you take into consideration Mobley's stellar 3-point shooting, elite rim protection and interior defense and Green's athleticism and multi-faceted scoring ability. Either of these young phenoms would perfectly mesh with this dynamic and booming Cavs team. With the no. 3 pick at their disposal, the future success of this franchise hangs in the balance for Cleveland.

Potential Free Agent Hot Zone

With the Cavs having a bright future and a great mix of young players on their roster, things are slowly starting to look up for them. If they were able to make a good draft pick then maybe that would lead to them making a strong enough playoff push that would start attracting more quality free agents in the offseason.

This in-turn would allow them to start building towards contention each year instead of putting all their chips in the NBA draft lottery. That may also heavily be predicated on them holding onto the no. 3 spot and making a good enough pick that will allow them to stay the course for a rebuild that will generate sustainable progress for them.

It has been a while since Cavs have been able to make some strong free agent signings, but with the right pick and a solid young team that's built to contend long-term, they may be closer than they realize. By just a making few more ideal draft picks, this could be the start of a complete turnaround for a franchise that's been in shambles ever since LeBron James and Kyrie Irving left them for greener pastures.

At the end of the day it really comes down to whether or not the Cavs want to go through a tenuous rebuild and allow their young stars to develop. Or if they want to form a winning team right now and possibly get in on the Ben Simmons sweepstakes and make a strong enough offer to the Sixers that would more than likely lead to the departure of Sexton and Nance Jr. to go along with their no. 3 draft pick.

On the other hand, they would have an exciting young trio in Garland, Simmons, and Allen whom they could start building around while adding a few key veteran pieces. Whichever way they decide to go, all signs point to them being better off by keeping their current spot in the draft and staying the course for the growth and development of their youthful squad that will sooner than later make be making some serious noise in the playoffs.
