Nothing is set in stone in the NBA Draft. Even if the Detroit Pistons have already won the NBA Lottery and will be allowed to select first in the 2021 NBA Draft, trades can still shake up draft night as they have in the past. Whether it was the Milwaukee Bucks trading Dirk Nowitzki to the Dallas Mavericks, the Seattle Supersonics shipping Scottie Pippen to the Chicago Bulls, or the Charlotte Hornets sending Kobe Bryant to the Los Angeles Lakers, draft night trades can change the course of a franchise.

This year’s draft will be no different, with several lottery teams poised to make a move instead of keeping their picks. While most teams will likely stay put and draft a young talent that they can develop and build around, others might be more inclined to acquire more proven players instead of waiting for the growth of a promising rookie. Here are three lottery teams who could pull the trigger and make trades during the 2021 NBA Draft.

1. Toronto Raptors

The Raptors are no strangers to striking gold in the NBA Draft, such as when they selected future All-Stars like Tracy McGrady, Chris Bosh, and DeMar DeRozan. Because of their recent success, Toronto didn’t have to worry about the ping pong balls bouncing their way. But after a 27-45 campaign this season, the Raptors made a return to the NBA Lottery and were awarded the fourth overall pick. It’s their highest pick since they drafted Andrea Bargnani first overall pick in 2006, and Masai Ujiri and the Raptors front office can use it to either select a young talent or make a trade for a more experienced player.

While the Raptors can select players like Jalen Green, Jalen Suggs, or Scottie Barnes, it wouldn’t be surprising to see them explore other options such as trading the pick for a veteran. Considering the talent of the players they can select with the fourth pick, a lot of teams could be willing to meet their asking price. While selecting a player through the draft means waiting for their development, adding a veteran player to the core of Pascal Siakam, Fred VanVleet, and Kyle Lowry can put them right back in playoff contention in the Eastern Conference.

2. Golden State Warriors

After they finished the season with a 39-33 record and narrowly missed the playoffs, the Golden State Warriors have an opportunity to add more talent after winning the seventh and 14th overall picks in the 2021 Draft. The Warriors took a different approach last season when they stayed put and selected James Wiseman with the second overall pick. But after Wiseman had an up-and-down rookie season that was cut short by an injury, Golden State could be more open to a different approach.

Steph Curry had an MVP-caliber season, but they still fell short of the playoffs due to the lack of talent around him. With Draymond Green still in the fold and Klay Thompson returning from injury after a two-year absence, the Dubs are likely to go into win-now mode. One way to do that is by trading one of their coveted 2021 NBA Draft picks for a veteran player to pair with their All-Stars to help them return to being contenders in the tough Western Conference.

3. New Orleans Pelicans

With a young core centered on Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram, the Pelicans entered the 2020-2021 season with high expectations under head coach Stan Van Gundy. But after a disappointing 31-41 season where they finished 11th in the West, the Pelicans parted ways with Van Gundy. Their frustrating campaign did win them the 10th overall pick in the 2021 Draft, which they can use to select a young player to add to their roster.

But while New Orleans could select a young talent like Corey Kispert, Keon Johnson, or Tre Mann in the 2021 NBA Draft, David Griffin and their front office could also opt to trade for a veteran player. While their All-Stars are still young, adding an experienced player to complement Ingram and Williamson could immediately help the Pelicans return to playoff contention.
