The New England Patriots have made a splashing singing bringing in quarterback Cam Newton to compete for the team's starting quarterback job. There is understandably a lot of buzz surrounding this news with the quarterback position with the Patriots being a question mark after Tom Brady left to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during free agency. Newton is a solid quarterback in the league, and even though he might make the Patriots better, this isn't a move that is going to get the team over the edge to win the AFC, let's take a look at three reasons why.

Not Conservative Enough

Brady was much more than a game manager with the Patriots, but Bill Belichick is looking for a quarterback who is going to make the right play and not turn the ball over. In 124 starts during Newton's career, he has 108 interceptions, which isn't a terrible number, but there is too often where Belichick is going to be left holding his breath. When he is running the ball, he has had 55 fumbles, another number that has to be a concern. A couple of times this year when the team can't afford it, Newton is going to turn the ball over.

Still Going To Have Troubles In AFC East

Even though the Patriots still have a strong defense, and Newton should help the squad, this isn't the same AFC East that Brady was used to playing for so many years.

The Buffalo Bills look like they are a team that is ready to finally win the division again with Stefon Diggs and Josh Allen leading the offense. The New York Jets hope this is the year they take the next step forward, and the Miami Dolphins always give the Patriots all kinds of issues.

If they can't win the AFC East, that is going to make the road in the playoffs an even more daunting task.

Injuries

The one thing that can't be ignored with Newton is his injury history. Newton has dealt with shoulder injuries, and there still has to be concerned about if that creep back up. He only played in two games in 2019, but it was clear that his shoulder injury was still bothering him. After two games, his season was done because of a Lisfranc fracture. Being a mobile quarterback that is always the concern that one hit could knock him out for the season. If he is injured, the Patriots will be right back where they were before signing Newton.
