As the season is winding down, NBA teams such as the Golden State Warriors will start to look at their roster and plan for the future. This means a lot of tough decisions and conversations, and in that vein, any team with a few expiring contracts must take extra care to choose the right players to keep on the ship. Consider Kelly Oubre.

This holds especially true for the Warriors. With Klay Thompson gone, this has been a relatively disappointing season despite the glorious return of Steph Curry. Steph has been tearing up the league this entire season on his own, but Golden State brass definitely knows, or should know, that one player was and is simply not good enough to win in this league. There is too much talent on the floor at any given moment for a single player alone to overcome.

In short, Steph needs as much support as he can get with the Warriors. People forget, but those pre-KD Warrior teams were dangerous not just because of their Big Three of Steph, Klay, and Draymond Green, but because their support pieces were so good, Andre Iguodala in particular.

If Golden State is aiming to rebuild, that is what the Warriors should be rebuilding — and Kelly Oubre, Jr. is the first step. Here's why:

Warriors Reason 1: Value

Here's the thing about the former lottery pick: he's not ‘Big Three' material. If Draymond Green continues to decline at his rate and Klay Thompson's injuries affect his shooting and defensive prowess, there is no single player on Golden State that can take their place. But of the Warriors' role players, Oubre is easily the most interesting.

His advanced stats aren't great (-0.5 BPM, 13.2 PER this season), but he's worth at least 15 points every night, and 5-6 rebounds to boot. But Oubre's value doesn't just go into his stats, which is key. Kelly Oubre, Jr. is the Warriors' next great energy player, a la Iguodala or Shaun Livingston, and is a skill upgrade over both players.

With Steph and Klay staking their claims on a huge portion of Golden State's salary cap, the team is desperate to find value. Oubre is all that and a bag of chips. His scoring average is down a tick since his time with Phoenix, but he's also on a better and more egalitarian team with the Warriors.

His PER is also higher than his career average, and you bet he'll grow as a passer on the Warriors with a target like Steph Curry. Compare that to boring, one-dimensional scorer Andrew Wiggins, and you can bet that Oubre will eclipse him before this time next year. By the way, that's not accounting for his defense, which by eye test alone is as good as Green's at this point in Green's career.

Reason 2: Potential

In Oubre, you have the seeds of a player Steph hasn't gotten a chance to play with in the regular season or playoffs on the Warriors. Oubre's player profile is truly unique as a lanky tweener with scoring touch, and his energy adds a new dimension to his game. Think Klay Thompson Lite, or Andre Iguodala with the athleticism and touch more balanced out.

Oubre is still growing too. He's still a few years away from reaching his athletic prime, and he's only had one offseason to jell with Steph on the Warriors. One of Draymond's primary points of value is the chemistry he's been able to develop with Steph Curry over the past decade, and there shouldn't be any doubt that Oubre can grow into that as well.

As stated, he's averaging around 15, 6 and 1, but if Klay and Draymond deteriorate, Oubre is poised to do more with the Warriors. He averaged 18 points per contest just two seasons ago with Phoenix!

As for why Oubre will fill out that potential, or at least is a good bet to do so is because of the third reason the Warriors can't lose him:

Reason 3: Attitude

This. So many players have value and potential, but so few have this. They don't have the attitude to compete in the NBA. If he didn't prove that in Phoenix, Kelly Oubre, Jr. proven it so far this year with the Warriors.

Much more importantly than the stats he posts is the eye test, which he passes with flying colors. He shows controlled energy, and as he continues to develop, the Warriors will give him all the chances to show off his versatile skills, if he's willing to work.

If you're Bob Myers and the rest of the Warriors' front office, you are simply stupid if you let go of Kelly Oubre, Jr. especially at the expense of Andrew Wiggins' over-bloated contract. If they can somehow manage to find some poor shmuck to take Wiggins off of their hands, then they should get Oubre some security and closure on that roster spot. Give him a chance to develop with Draymond, Curry, and Klay teaching him, as well as a growth partner in James Wiseman, and you have a roster for both the present and the future.
