The San Francisco 49ers are already making some moves to free up some cap space. According to Chris Biderman of The Sacramento Bee, superstar pass rusher Dee Ford restructured his contract to help the cap.

“I think that move was more of a house-keeping, cap-mechanic type of a move,” General Manager John Lynch said. “There’s going to be some things coming down the line that balance it out that don’t include going to get a big-time player. Our roster’s pretty much set.”

The 49ers brought Ford to the team last season, after he racked up a career-high 13 sacks with the Kansas City Chiefs. However, last season Ford managed just 6.5 sacks in 11 games with San Francisco. While he still made his presence known, it was not exactly what the team was expecting from him.

With that in mind, it makes sense that he is one of the players that the 49ers were hoping they could restructure, and Ford came through. This move clears up around $9.5 million. That is no small chunk of change.

Once again, the 49ers should have one of the best defenses in all of football. And even with this restructuring, expect Ford to be a major part of that.

In six years in the NFL, he has already accumulated 37 sacks. And that is with a couple of disappointing seasons mixed in there.

While 2019 was not perfect, Ford showed a lot of promise and flashed that superstar potential that he has.

The 49ers' already have a stacked pass rush. Ford is certainly going to have a lot of competition when it comes to getting to the quarterback.

That being said, he has proven he is valuable to this team. He will get his sacks, and now he's doing it while saving the team some extremely important money that they can use to improve elsewhere.
