Charles Haley, Ronnie Lott, and Marcus Allen all took part in a Zoom call recently, prompting plenty of laughs. Amid the NFL legends' conversations, they spoke about Lott cutting off his finger when he was with the San Francisco 49ers.

The conversation began with Allen questioning Lott's mental thinking before he chose to remove his finger during his playing career.

“Is it brave or nuts? Or crazy? Which one is it?”

That would prompt Haley to laughingly say that Ronnie Lott's choice to amputate his finger was a questionable one.

“I’m thinkin’ dumb! (laughter all around) But you know what? That’s what he wanted everybody to know, man. That took him from being a regular man to a legend. He’s not a man no more, he’s a legend. A living legend.”

Allen would agree with Haley's sentiment that Lott's legend grew when he lost his finger playing football. He would also proceed to ask what Lott did with the finger when he had it detached from his hand.

“Charles, you’re absolutely right. Right that moment — that’s where heroes are born and legends never die. Ronnie Lott cuts his finger off. And what did you do Ronnie? Did you leave it? Did you bring it home with you?”

Of course, for those that don't know, Ronnie Lott broke his pinkie finger and could have missed an extended period of time due to needing surgery. However, instead of undergoing reconstructive surgery, he elected to amputate his finger.

Even without Lott's eye-popping anecdote involving his finger, he was one of the best safeties in NFL history. But there's no doubt Lott's legacy as a tough-nosed player was confirmed when he continued his career with nine fingers.
