Being mentioned in the same breath as Jerry Rice is remarkable and that is something that Brandon Aiyuk of the San Francisco 49ers can achieve this season. While Aiyuk still has some work to do, Rice spoke about the prospects of Aiyuk potentially breaking his rookie receiving record in 2020.

Via Kelana Martin of the 49ers' website:

“If he breaks my record, I'll be the first one to congratulate him,” Rice said this week on 95.7 the Game.

Throughout the season, the 49ers have dealt with a multitude of injuries, including Aiyuk himself. The rookie first-round pick out of Arizona State would miss Week 1 due to a hamstring injury.

He would also miss San Francisco's Week 9 contest due to being ruled as a close-contact to a member of the 49ers that tested positive for COVID-19. Despite playing in only 10 games for the 49ers this season, Aiyuk is on track to possibly supplant Rice's rookie receiving record.

Back in 1985, Rice caught 49 passes for 927 yards and three touchdowns in his rookie campaign with the 49ers. Though, it should be noted that Rice played in all 16 games in his rookie season, which Aiyuk was unable to do.

However, Aiyuk currently has 660 receiving yards on 50 receptions, totaling 66 yards per game. If Aiyuk hopes to surpass Rice's rookie record, he'll need to average slightly more than 89 yards per game in the final three games of the season.

Luckily for Aiyuk, he has some favorable matchups to end the season, beginning against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 15. He will then face the Arizona Cardinals and the Seattle Seahawks to end the 2020 campaign.
