The San Francisco 49ers did not address their quarterback controversy this offseason. Jimmy Garappolo is still on the roster despite Trey Lance lurking as the likely starter. The second-year quarterback got a massive endorsement from Jerry Rice.

According to Matt Maiocco of NBS Sports, Rice and Lance filmed a commercial together for Rice's G.O.A.T. Fuel energy drinks. He came away very impressed with how the 49ers' youngster throws the ball.

“If you’re like 20 yards down the field or more, it’s great to have all of that velocity…But those underneath passes is where you need to tone it down just a bit, and that’s an area he has to work on because he’s a gunslinger. Those short passes underneath, you need to dial it back a little bit.

“It’s a very catchable ball. Joe was more about timing. Steve had a little bit of a more-stronger arm. But It was a different spin on that ball also that was a little more difficult, But I would say Trey, his ball is very catchable.”

This is not Rice's only time propping Lance up. He said just a week ago that he is ready to be the 49ers' starter. He only played a handful of games last season but could help the offense improve and become more dynamic.

Lance's potential and Garappolo's limitations suggest that San Francisco should make the switch. Although it may be too late to trade Jimmy G, it's the perfect time for the 49ers to make Trey Lance the guy.
