San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo seemed fairly confident when fielding a question from reporters about who head coach Kyle Shanahan plans on starting in Week 1. The veteran was all smiles at the podium, which hints that he's at least won the initial competition against rookie Trey Lance.

NBC Sports' cameras captured the newsworthy quote, which should erase any doubt about who's starting the season opener for the 49ers.

“Yeah, I have a pretty good idea,” Garoppolo said. “It's whatever he [Shanahan] decides, yeah. I have a pretty good idea, I'm pretty happy with where I'm at right now and everything, and just the offense as a whole. But yeah, Kyle's the head man. He'll make the call.”

You can hear the full context of the question below.

The 49ers began turning heads this offseason around draft time. San Francisco traded three first round picks so they could move up from 12th to third overall and draft Lance. The athletic rookie immediately put pressure on Garoppolo, who seemed a few bad throws away from returning to the roll he started his career as, a backup.

Neither 49ers quarterback played outstanding through the team's first two preseason games, despite Shanahan previously claiming he believes both quarterbacks are capable of playing at a high level. Lance's completion percentage is low, and both threw interceptions against the Los Angeles Chargers.

The 49ers believe Lance could allow Shanahan to operate more creatively as a play caller. However, the young head coach is rolling with old reliable going into 2021.
