Much of the latest buzz from around the NFL suggests the San Francisco 49ers will select Alabama quarterback Mac Jones with the No. 3 pick in the upcoming draft.

However, former Niners cornerback Richard Sherman believes Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields might be the better playmaker for head coach Kyle Shanahan's offensive system.

Sherman said on the latest episode of The Chris Collinsworth podcast he believes people are missing the “big picture” when it comes to Fields, adding the Buckeyes star is every bit as efficient in the pocket as he is athletic making plays with his feet. The former All-Pro cornerback said the 49ers drafting Fields would change the complexion of the NFC West:

“And the offensive line is great, but now you have to add that element of pause in that division,” Sherman said, via Josh Schrock of NBC Sports Bay Area. “The NFC West is just a mobile quarterback division. If you draft Justin Fields, and he ever gets on the field and plays after Jimmy plays another 10 years or whatever he does, I think it changes the dynamic and adds a dynamic to Kyle’s offense that’s necessary. The pass rush now has to pause. The blitzes have to slow down. Now, you have to get there. Because if you don’t get there, he’ll dice through your defense in a way that’s going to get ugly.”

Adam Schefter of ESPN reported Tuesday Jones-to-San Francisco is “very likely,” and noted Shanahan confidant Chris Simms has been every bit as convinced the 49ers will take Jones.

But Fields certainly impressed with his deep ball and mobility during his Pro Day, all but cementing his status as one of the top quarterback prospects in this year's class.

Sherman's dissenting opinion on the Jones-Fields debate is also interesting because many pundits have suggested it is Jones who might be the better fit for Shanahan's scheme.

Regardless, the Niners should have some awesome talent to choose from when they are on the clock at the No. 3 spot.
