There is plenty of optimism surrounding the San Francisco 49ers going into the 2019 NFL season. Most of it stems from the return of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

Garoppolo's tenure in San Francisco got off to a rough start due to injury. According to Mike Sando of The Athletic, one general manager feels he has a huge upside if he can remain healthy:

“He is really accurate, he is smart and he is athletic, but he hasn’t played a lot of football, and you see it at times,” a GM said. “I just think he’s got everything if he can stay healthy. It sounds like he will have a better cast this year, and he’s got the coach.”

One would be hard-pressed to find a quarterback in the NFL with more to prove than Garoppolo. The 49ers made quite the investment to bring him over from the New England Patriots as their new franchise quarterback. Unfortunately, he still has yet to justify his status as one of the richest players in the league.

Although San Francisco endured their fair share of struggles in the 2018 campaign without Garoppolo, it did force other players on offense to step up and help carry the load. With plenty of depth in the backfield and one of the NFL's premier tight ends in George Kittle, there is plenty of hope for a potential resurgence next season.

It is safe to say that any success the 49ers enjoy in 2019 will be indicative of Garoppolo's level of play under center moving forward.
