The San Francisco 49ers fell short of winning the Super Bowl, but at least they'll still have Robert Saleh as their defensive coordinator in 2020 as he is staying in San Francisco after declining an interview with Michigan State.

In just the past couple of seasons, Saleh has become a household name in the NFL. Under Saleh, the 49ers' defense has quickly evolved into one of the best groups in the league.

This season, San Francisco's defense was No. 1 in the NFL against the pass and was the No. 2 defense overall. Due to his fiery personality on the sideline and his defensive mindset, Saleh began to draw interest as a head coach in the NFL.

However, despite interviewing for the job, the Cleveland Browns chose to hire Kevin Stefanski instead of Saleh. The 49ers' organization would've been elated to see Saleh receive a promotion. At the same time, they're glad that he's going to remain with the team for another year.

Given that Saleh is still considered a future head coach in the NFL, it would make little sense for him to take the Michigan State job. Earlier this week, Mark Dantonio stepped down as the head coach at Michigan State after 14 seasons with the program.

Saleh, a Michigan native, was likely at the top of Michigan State's list of candidates. Unfortunately for the Spartans, he won't be heading to the college ranks to begin his head coaching career.

Instead, Saleh is going to serve another year as the defensive coordinator of the 49ers. The extremely competitive assistant knows there is unfinished business to tend to after San Francisco's Super Bowl defeat.
